History of the English Department

History of the English Department

The establishment of the English Department has gone through a complicated process. It started when the English lecturers working under the General Subject Service Unit (Unit Pelayanan Mata Kuliah Umum, UP-MKU) were inspired to create a new study programme: D-3 English Language. Then, the Director of POLBAN approved the establishment of the English Department to manage the study programme. Here are the key events that took place during the establishment:

  1. The completion of the project for polytechnic development and the education of prospective polytechnic lecturers in Indonesia resulted in the former English Master Teachers from Polytechnic Education Development Centre (PEDC) being reassigned as English lecturers at the Polytechnic ITB (now POLBAN).
  2. The joining of the former English Master Teachers from PEDC has resulted in an excess number of English lecturers at UP-MKU.
  3. The large number of English lecturers at the time inspired them to establish a D-3 English Language. Furthermore, this programme would provide them with an opportunity to further their knowledge. However, they struggled to obtain approval from the authorities.
  4. In 1997, after the idea was approved, they commenced a trial year for the D-1 English for Secretary study programme, headed by Dra. Ratna Padmi Trihartanti
  5. The establishment of the programme was delayed for several years and resumed in 2004. On February 25, 2004, the head of UP-MKU issued Decree No. 019/NO9.R.8/PP/II/2004, commissioning a team of four lecturers to write a proposal for the establishment. The team members were Ratna Padmi Trihartanti, who served as the head; Esti Sugiharti, the secretary; Yani Adyawardhani, responsible for the curriculum; and Dedy Setiawan, in charge of industrial affiliations. Subsequently, the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs convened a meeting with the lecturers to discuss the possibility of launching the D-3 English Language study programme.
  6. The establishment proposal was finally approved by the Director General of Higher Education, through the decree No. 2681/D/T/2006 dated on 12th July 2006, to run the D-3 English Language study programme formally.
  7. In August 2006, POLBAN officially opened registration for new students in the D-3 English Language study programme. In this initial phase, the lecturers had to ensure that each class had at least 32 students. Fortunately, 50 students applied for the programme.
  8. In 2008, the English Department was established to manage and develop its study programme.
  9. In 2012, the first accreditation, the D-3 English Language study programme was accredited “A” by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (Badan Akreditasi Nasional – Perguruan Tinggi, BAN-PT).
  10. In 2022, the D-3 English Language study programme received an accreditation rating of BAIK SEKALI (Very Good) from BAN-PT.
