The English Department of Politeknik Negeri Bandung (Polban) held another Guest Lecture session on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Taking place at the P2T Building of Polban, the event featured Dwi Novita Lestari, Assistant HR & Training Manager from Aston Pasteur Bandung, as the keynote speaker. The session was attended by all second-year students of the English Department and carried the theme English in Professional and Hospitality Industry.
In her presentation, Dwi emphasized the importance of English proficiency in the professional world, particularly in the hospitality industry. “One of the main keys to effective communication is mastering English, especially in the hospitality sector. Working in this industry means interacting frequently with people from diverse cultural backgrounds,” she stated.
In addition to aiding communication, Dwi explained that mastering English can open career opportunities on an international scale. She highlighted that English proficiency enhances overall work experiences. “Effective communication in English can create a positive and productive work environment, especially in the hospitality industry,” she added.
Dwi also addressed various communication scenarios common in the professional world, such as guest check-in/check-out processes, food and beverage services, and concierge services. Moreover, she underscored the importance of effective written communication skills, including grammar and punctuation, vocabulary development, formal writing style, as well as proofreading and editing.
Furthermore, Dwi shared strategies to improve English listening and speaking skills, such as active listening, practicing speaking, and immersing oneself in English-language resources like films, TV shows, music, and podcasts.
The event concluded with a message from Dwi about the importance of continuous English development. “Set realistic goals, practice consistently, and always seek feedback to refine your communication skills,” she advised.
This Guest Lecture session provided valuable insights for students on the critical role of English in the professional world and the hospitality industry, as well as how they can prepare themselves for success in this field. (JBI)
